Who are we?

Welcome to Zion's Women of Wisdom blog!

Our name comes from Proverbs 3:13-15
"Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding, for the gain from her is better than gain from silver and her profit better than gold. She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her."

Women of Wisdom exists to encourage, equip, and develop every woman in our community to realize her potential as a woman and leader in the name of Jesus Christ.

Our purpose is to build relationships among us for growth in our Christian womanhood, including new comers, established, and inter-generational.

Vacation Bible School at Zion Community Church!!

Hi Zionites!

Let me take a minute to introduce myself.  I am Jeanne Mesko, and I will be the Vacation Bible School Director this year.  My family and I are fairly new to Zion Community Church, attending since I brought my kids to bible school last year.  I was happy to take on the role of director since it was VBS that played the pivital role in our finding ZCC and ultimately in my Christian growth.

I am very excited about VBS this year.  It is a Jesus focused curriculum integrated into an awesomely fun beach theme!  I’m hoping I can count on many of you to help make VBS a great success and bringing Jesus to the kids (and parents) of our great community.

VBS will take place July 10th - 14th, 6 to 8:30 PM.

I am recruiting VBS volunteers NOW!  I encourage you to pray and consider how you can use your talents to help during VBS this year.  I am looking for volunteers in many different areas:

Station Leaders:  These positions require some preparation time several weeks before VBS begins; develop, coordinate and lead activities during VBS, attend VBS meetings.  Currently looking for leaders for Crafts, Snacks, and Games.

Team Leaders:  Lead a “crew” of kids around to the different stations during VBS each
night.

Preschool Volunteers:  To work directly with the Preschool aged children, leading
activities, etc.

Nursery Workers:  Work in the nursery during the week.  Nursery services will be
available for VBS volunteers only.

Other Volunteers:  Many volunteers will be needed to help out in all the different areas
during the week, i.e, Bible Time, Crafts, Music, Games, Decorations, Registration,
Snacks, Nightly Clean Up Crew, Volunteer Dinner, Advertising, etc.

If you would like to be part of one of the most fun weeks of the year, please let me know as soon as possible so I can begin constructing the VBS Beach Bash Team!  Indicate which area you are interested in working (and a second choice) and I’ll do my best to ensure each of you are able to do some thing you feel comfortable and want to do.  If you don’t have a preference, please let me know that also.

If you are unable to volunteer to work at VBS, you can still help us through your continued prayers.

Feel free to contact me via email or phone.

Thank you so much for your support!  I’m looking forward to working with and getting to know many of you better!

Many Blessings,
Jeanne MeskoVBS Director

Take a Walk - Weekly Devotion by Nancy Wilson

"If you pick 'em up, Lord, I'll put 'em down."
Prayer of a Tired Walker ~ Author Unknown

Do you like to walk? It’s great exercise, fairly inexpensive, and good for you! City living seems to require more walking than life for most people in the suburbs. Country folks walk quite a bit too.  Getting enough exercise is a challenge. We are such a sedentary society aren’t we? Perhaps if the price of gas continues to climb, this will have a major impact on how we get around and we’ll all be in better shape!

My favorite place to walk is on a beach. Beach walking is not necessarily power walking in my book. I like to stroll leisurely at water’s edge, rummaging around for sea shells or bits of sea glass to add to my collection. Whenever I can persuade Rick to walk with me at the beach, I have to remind him to slow down and just enjoy.

Walking with a companion is very pleasant. Whether it’s just casually ambling along the beach or in the woods or striding with purpose to reach a particular destination, it's great to share the journey with a friend.

Scripture records, “Enoch walked faithfully with God...” (Genesis 5:24a, NIV)  How did Enoch accomplish this? At church, we often talk about walking with God.  What does that mean exactly? Isn’t God a Spirit? In response to the question, “What is God like?” the child’s catechism explains,“God is a spirit and does not have a body like man.”  How then is it possible to walk with God?

I did a little searching and found a few things that Scripture reveals about the matter.  I read, Blessed are those whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the LORD. Blessed are those who keep his statutes and seek him with all their heart— they do no wrong but follow his ways.” Psalm 119:1-3, NIV  From this passage, we could determine that walking with God is to walk or live according to God’s commands. That makes sense. Read on.

Psalm 23:4 tells us, “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. (NIV) Does this speak of a literal walk in valleys? More likely, it refers to how we walk figuratively through the ups and downs of life.  This verse tells us that God is with us during difficult times as a shepherd would walk with his sheep to guide, comfort and protect them out on the hillside. Walking with God in this example means that we benefit from God's care as we walk with Him.

Have you ever tried walking through your house in the dark? You may think you know where everything is located, but stuff gets moved! I always watch out for my black cat (can’t see her in the dark) and fuzzy cat toy mice.  Friends with kids tell me there is nothing worse than stepping on Legos in the dark. Ow!  It is definitely better to turn on the light. “Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12, NIV) Walking in spiritual darkness is not advised either. Walking through life with Jesus as the light in your soul is also walking with God.

Physical walking is good for us. It strengthens us and helps us clear our minds. Spiritually, walking with God is also beneficial as we see His help each day through prayer and Scripture. If your walk with God is regular and determined, you will be able to withstand the challenges that life throws at you.

Walking with God? Not as hard as it sounds. Where should you start? Trust Christ as Savior, attend church, study God's Word and be obedient to it, spend time in prayer, and allow His Truth to guide your life.  You can't find a better walking companion that our loving Heavenly Father!

Spring Cleaning Your Finances from Keeping the Kingdom First Blog

In many households, the arrival of spring brings a sudden urge to clean out the fridge, dust those pesky cobwebs from the corners, and overhaul the hall closet. The tradition of Spring Cleaning brings a fresh start before the busy summer season and a welcome change from the cold days of winter.
As you prepare your home for a thorough scrubbing, don’t forget to add your finances to your checklist. I can hear you groaning. What do finances have to do with cleaning? And why add yet another task to the list? Well, since you likely recently filed your tax return, or plan to in the very near future (raising hand), now is the perfect time to reorganize and file those important papers.
Financial matters are also a major source of paper clutter. You know that pile on your desk you’ve been meaning to tackle? Now is the time! So let’s get started. Today we are addressing the physical aspects of your finances. Later this month, we’ll cover the intangibles.

Paper

The good news about spring cleaning your finances is that it can be done in just one afternoon with just 2 basic tools: a filing system and a quality paper shredder. Gather all those financial documents from around the house, including stray files and forgotten drawers.
Start by making 2 piles: KEEP and SHRED, of course!
  • First take those statements and bills out of their envelopes and unfold them for easy access.
  • Now start sorting. The general rule of thumb most experts recommend is 6 years for tax documents and 1 year for everything else. Old statements, bills and most receipts can go in the shred pile.
  • Keep W-2′s and other tax records for filing, labeled by year. Do keep receipts for major purchases.
  • Immediately toss credit card solicitations and any marketing materials that tend to pile up.
If you are just starting a filing system, keep a separate folder for each utility, bank, insurance, pay stubs and so forth. Be sure to clearly label each folder. Place the oldest items in first so that the newest stays on top. As we go more and more paperless with online banking and bill pay, this step may not seem crucial until you need these documents for a home loan. So keep on filing just in case.
Frugal Tip: If you come across empty envelopes as you declutter, consider saving them for other uses such as coupons or school notes.

Coins

Now once you gotten control of the paper clutter, don’t overlook that other money mess the home: loose change. I find it ALL over my house. Even with multiple bowls and jars just for this purpose, somehow it never quite makes it to the right spot.
Gather up loose bills and change and make a game plan. Are you saving it for a rainy day? Creating Christmas Jars? Or perhaps you are ready for a trip to Coinstar to exchange it for cash. It is not doing you any good just piling up, so decide how to handle it.

How do YOU spring clean your finances each year?

This post is part of the “Put Your House in Order” blogging series. Together we are exploring the topics of food, children, decorating, faith and finances as they relate to our homes. Get caught up withModeling Stewardship.

Build Me a Son by General Douglas A. MacArthur

Build me a son, O Lord,
who will be strong enough to know when he is weak,
and brave enough to face him self when he is afraid;
one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat,
and humble and gentle in victory.

Build me a son whose wishbone will not be
where his backbone should be;
a son who will know Thee- and that
to know himself is the foundation stone of knowledge.

Lead him, I pray, not in the path of ease and comfort,
but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge.
Here, let him learn to stand up in the storm;
here, let him team compassion for those who fall.

Build me a son whose heart will be clear, whose goals will be high;
a son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men;
one who will learn to laugh, yet never forget how to weep;
one who will reach into the future, yet never forget the past.

And after all these things are his,
add, I pray, enough of a sense of humor,
so that he may always be serious,
yet never take himself too seriously.

Give him humility, so that he may always remember
the simplicity of true greatness,
the open mind of true wisdom,
the meekness of true strength.

Then I, his father, will dare to whisper,
"I have not lived in vain."

What is the BEST thing you can do for your husband?

Prayer!  Praying daily for him will not only bless him but you!!

Tammy Connelly is hosting a month long prayer group through Facebook. She says -

"Blessing our husbands with a month long prayer group dedicated entirely to them. We're praying the prayers found in the book "Power of a Praying Wife" by Stormie OMartian. No need to have the book to pray these prayers. However, it's a nice compliment to the prayer. Also, each chapter is a guide to the thoughts behind the prayer for that chapter. Certainly there will be some statements you may not feel comfortable with or you don't agree with, no surprise as not one of us will completely agree with another. But hold tight! Keep going! especially as this exercise is for our spouses more than for ourselves."

So, click here and sign up for daily messages of prayers.  Starts Monday, March 7, 2011.  Any woman is welcome to join in!

Two Special Events at Bellefonte Art Museum for Centre County!

Hi Friends and Family -

It is with much excitement to announce two special events happening at the Bellefonte Art Museum for Centre County!

The museum was awarded a grand sum from a grant to refurbish the second floor of our 200 year old grey stone which houses the museum.  The renovation, which started today!!, will enable us to use the second floor for children's creative workshops and discovery stations.  Also on the second floor will be an Artist Community Gallery where artists will be hosted as "artists in residence" for month long occupancy to show, sell and create their work within the space - all for the public to view.  There will be an gift shop along with a Lecture and Rotating special interest room.  This is all on the second floor!!  The downstairs already has a beautiful large two room gallery and a special tea room for tea socials along with the museums own art.

The museum is closed for renovations until April.

So when it reopens the show entitled "The Artful Dog" will be displayed.  A magnificent private collection of paintings, sculptures, photographs and antiques - a true survey of the dog in art, will be in the first floor galleries.  Plus you can submit a photo of a special dog you might know or knew (don't we all!)  along with $5.00 which will be split with our favorite local organization - PAWS!  All the pooch photos will be displayed in the tea room of the museum during The Artful Dog exhibition for public viewing.  Please note the photo will not be returned, plans for using them in a children's art program is planned.

The museum is free and open to the public.

I do hope you take this opportunity to mark your calendars for the opening of the show.  If you check out our website you will see all the other upcoming shows for the year 2011 and beginning 2012.  http://www.bellefontemuseum.org  .  Please contact me if you have any questions.

Cheers to all!
